Why not do it like the locals?! Explore the maritime flair of Gothenburg, Sweden’s busiest port city.
We will travel on one of the ferry boats that will take us along and across the river Göta älv. While traveling on the boat, I will tell you all about the present and past of Gothenburg.
Gothenburg used to be a city with many shipyards until 1979. The former shipyard district on the northern banks of the river has been transformed into wide-stretched quays, new residential areas, restaurants, cafés and theatres. We will go for a stroll along the waterside and see some of the newest neighbourhoods in town, while feeling the breeze from the river.
An action-packed adventure is to go by RIB-boat out to Vinga in the Gothenburg archipelago.
They are fast and fun! The RIB – speed rubber boats – take you out to Vinga Lighthouse in the Gothenburg archipelago. All Gothenburg are familiar with Vinga, but how many have actually been there? Vinga it is a barren island with a lighthouse, about 10 miles from the center, but people actually lived here! The iconic lighthouse was and is the first sight for seafarers before they reach Gothenburg harbour.

Gothenburg and its charming islands
After a brief sightseeing tour through the city of Gothenburg we will take the ferry to Gothenburg’s northern archipelago. The ten populated islands are accessible by carferry, about 12 000 people live in the municipality. The nature and coastline are beautiful and we will visit 4 of the 10 islands. Bevor traveling back to town, we will taste the famous “Hönökaka” which comes from the island Hönö and became a very popular flatbread in Sweden.
With over 20 islands, the southern archipelago of Gothenburg is full of seaside gems.
If you are looking for good food, a spectacular natural scenery and someplace to unwind then this is the place to head for!
The car-free islands in the southern archipelago where about 4500 people live all year around are easily reached by public transport. Each of the 20 islands has a character on its own, but only 10 of them are inhabited. We will travel from the city center by bus or tram to Saltholmen and continue by boat. First stop will be the island of Brännö, famous for its traditional summer open-air-dance and child-friendly beaches. Brännö is a lively island in the southern part of Gothenburg’s archipelago with barely 800 inhabitants. Different to the other islands, it has relied on farming, piloting boats and shipping as its main sources of income.
From Brännö we will take the boat to our second stop, Styrsö. This island can be considered as the hub in the southern archipelago with around 1400 inhabitants. Here you can find a Post office, shops, cafés, guesthouses and restaurants.
If you are in Gothenburg, Marstrand ist a “must-see-sight”!
In the far west, where the archipelago ends and the open sea begins, you find the island of Marstrand with Carlsten Fortress at its top. The sailing town and seaside resort Marstrand is a visitors favourite. It is home to a harbour filled with all kinds of boats, cosy beautiful white wooden houses along car-free streets, top restaurants and cafées, sun and salty swims, music and spectacle. A short ferry ride across the strait brings you to the island of Marstrand, with a vibrant presence from the past mixed with trendy sailing jackets.
The West Sweden archipelago is made up of over 8000 islands, each with their own unique offerings and charm. Tjörn is one of them only a 1 hour bus ride from Gothenburg.
Tjörn is the sixth largest island with thousands small keys and skerries all around. One of the most picturesque is Klädesholmen – our destination on this trip. In past times, the tiny Klädesholmen hosted 30 herring processing factories! Today, this number has decreased to one. However: Herring from Klädesholmen is still the most famous and delicate throughout Sweden. You’ll find an adorable little herring museum which celebrates Klädesholmen history. The perfect place to enjoy fish, shellfish and special “herring plate” is the restaurant “Salt & Sill”. After lunch we will continue to Skärhamn were we visit der Nordic Watercolour Museum. Since the start in 2000 the Nordic Watercolour Museum has exhibited world class art from Salvador Dali, Bill Viola, Louise Bourgeois and Swedish favorites like Elsa Beskow, Anders Zorn and Lars Lerin. Exhibitions of the highest caliber in stunning surroundings!
One of Sweden’s most remarkable buildings, just 1 hours bus ride away south of Gothenburg.
Tjolöholm castle was built in 1898-1904 and the architecture is a mix of 14th century English style, Art Nouveau and innovative design features. Blanche Dickson, widow of the wealthy businessman James Fredrik Dickson, lived in the magnificent castle. In six years she and the young architect Lars Israel Wahlman (1870– 1952) had created one of Sweden’s most remarkable buildings.
A guided tour through the World Heritage Site Gammelstad Church town.
In Sweden, 16 historic churchtowns remain. Gammelstad in Northern Sweden has the country’s largest and best preserved church town with 405 cottages that holds 552 chambers. Our trip continues to Jokkmokk were we will visit the “Ájtte Museum” – Sami centre Jokkmokk, just north of the Arctic Circle. On our way home we will make a stop at Storfossen. The flow of the river varies considerably during the year. The rapids at Storfossen are the biggest undeveloped rapids in the Nordic region with a drop of 82 metres over 5 kilometres.
After a guided tour through the World Heritage Site Gammelstad we continue to the Treehotel.
What started with a film featuring a small wooden hut in the forest has become a cool hotel. These days Treehotel in Harads is considered one of the world’s major travel destinations!
For generations, people across the Arctic region have been using dog sleds to transport people and supplies over long distances.
Now that snow scooters and quad bikes have done away with the need for canine companions, dog sledding is basically just for fun. But it has grown to become one of the most popular winter activities in northern Scandinavia!
Listen to the sound of ice blocks being crushed against the hull of the boat. Go for a walk on the frozen sea and enjoy a hot drink on the ice.
Challenge the laws of nature in safe and comfortable conditions on the ice-classified vessel “Arctic Explorer”. One highlight is definitely the swimming in survival suits in the Sea of Bothnia!
Experience the magic northern lights
The Northern Lights, also called aurora borealis, appear in the beginning of September until the end of March in the northern part of Scandinavia. There are several ways that lead you there: You can either see them while riding a snowmobile, or you might prefer to see them on a light snowshoe walk.
You can choose to ride your own snowmobile or share one with a friend. No experience is required and all gear needed for a safe and comfortable trip will be supplied.
There are different tours, from 2 to 4 hours. Along the way, we will make coffee and tea stops, where the guide will tell you about the surroundings and about life and nature in Lapland. With the longer tours you even have the chance to try your luck with ice-fishing!
